Radiant, Virginia Statistic: Population, Charts, Map, Steets and More

In the third series of images, "Population & Steets in Radiant" (2016, by James O'Brien), O'Brien captures the conflicting intensities of Toronto's tower apartment neighborhoods. These neighbourhoods are home to one-quarter of the city's population, serve as immigration destinations, and harbor much of the city's urban poverty. They are also a result of modern ideologies gone awry. With this series of photographs, O'Brien invites viewers to think about these conflicting sites' evolving presence in the collective consciousness.

The streets of "Radiant City" are huge, with several lanes for automobile traffic. In contrast, buildings in the traditional city are generally three to ten stories tall and spaced far apart from one another. Furthermore, the streets in the traditional city often have a well-planned grid pattern, making them easy to navigate. Unlike in the traditional city, "Radiant City" doesn't have many neighborhoods.

The Radiant City was Le Corbu's vision of the ideal metropolis. Though the design of this utopian city never came to fruition, it influenced many modern urban planning ideas. For example, Corbu's master plan inspired the massive Bijlmer in Amsterdam. In addition, Le Corbusier developed parallel proposals for Village and Ferme Radieuse. These two visions reflected Corbu's ideas for a city that functions like a living organism.
