The Chehalis population is almost entirely White. The city is the fourth largest city in Washington State. The Hispanic/Latino population is 13.2%. Before the Great Depression, the Chehalis City economy was dominated by dairying, lumbering, and other farm production. After the Great Depression, logging ceased and the city's economy suffered, especially when the demand for lumber decreased. A decline in the population also led to the closing of sawmills and other wood-products companies. By 1900, there were about 2,300 people living in the Chehalis area. The Chehalis Valley Creamery opened in 1896, processing local milk for sale in Seattle and Tacoma. Coal mining produced raw materials for the area's economy.

The city has a number of parks. Many of these were built on donated land and others were built with community fundraising. The city is recognized as conservative, but slightly less conservative than the surrounding Lewis County. The Chronicle newspaper in Centralia provides news reports and features. There is no public library in the city, but the local newspaper produces a daily edition. It is the only daily newspaper that serves the Chehalis area.
