The population of Tenino was roughly 3,000 in 2010. The town was originally called Coal Bank, named for the local coal outcrop. In 1874, a demonstration took place at a coal mine south of town, resulting in the expulsion of many Chinese workers. These newcomers were replaced by Caucasian workers. The Chinese workers eventually left the area. However, Tenino remains an important agricultural center for the county.
