During the Woodrow Wilson administration, Albright worked in the Interior Department as a staff member to Secretary of the Interior Franklin K. Lane. He was thirty years older than Albright, and came to oversee national parks. The two formed a special bond and became close friends. Mather later suffered from manic depression, so Albright was able to take care of him in the last few years of his life.
