McGraws City is one of the few small towns in Cortland County with a Main Street Historic District that reflects its architectural heritage. Located south of Main Street, the town had a population of just over 3,000 people at its peak. Despite the town's relatively small size, the town's population is home to a number of notable organizations and businesses. It was home to New York Central College in the mid-19th century, which had approximately half African-American students. Two black professors taught there. Unfortunately, smallpox wiped out the college's enrollment by 1860.

In addition to its Main Street, the town's other historic districts are worth visiting. The Main Street Historic District features a row of late Victorian-era commercial buildings, many of them with brick and stamped metal facades. These buildings represent the prosperity of the town during the early twentieth century, as well as the effects of the mass-produced building materials on rural communities. The village's decline was a positive factor in preserving the architectural character and streetscape.
