In the 2nd century BC, Myra was one of the most important Lycian cities. The city was three miles east of Andriaki and was the administrative and regional capital. It was home to the family of the deities Apollon Surios, chief god of Lycia, and the goddess Eleuthera. Its aristocracy contributed to its political and economic power.

The ancient city was famous for its necropolis, theatre, and temples. However, during the early IVth century, the pious Nicholas Bishop burned down all the temples and shrines. However, the city's laws were liberal enough for people of different faiths to coexist. Saint Nicholas, then, became a popular saint, as did Apollo. Its harbour is home to a temple dedicated to Apollo. Apollo is the patron of children, sailors, merchants, and scientists.

In 809, the city fell to the Abbasid Empire and Caliph Harun al-Rashid. It was destroyed again by Arab raids in the early 11th century. The relics of St. Nicholas were stolen by Italian sailors and brought to Myra. The relics were eventually placed in a sarcophagus and are now revered by pilgrims.
