Weirton, West Virginia was incorporated in 1947, but has roots dating back to the mid-1700s. Originally known as Holiday Cove, the town is situated in the valley where Harmon Creek empties into the Ohio River. Despite being so close to the river, Weirton remains far enough away from the river to escape devastating floods. The city's proximity to the river offers both fresh water and cheap transportation.

The "new" Weirton Steel Company takes over from National on January 11, 1984. The "new" company completes its twenty-first quarter of profit, achieving the highest quarterly profit since 1889. Weirton Steel was ranked 268 on the Fortune 500 list of U.S. industrial corporations, but lost profits during the recession and made significant capital improvements. As a result, the population grew in tandem with the steel industry. As a result, four towns emerged during the first half of the twentieth century, eventually merging to one. The population of Weirton reached a high of 28,000 by the late 1970s, with the number of residents growing as a result.

Weirton's employment figures reflect the diversity of its residents. Its top three industries are health care & social assistance, manufacturing, and retail trade. The highest-paying sectors in Weirton, WV are mining, oil and gas extraction, and manufacturing. The city is also home to many workers in the steel industry, including the largest employer, ArcelorMittal. Interestingly, only a handful of residents live in poverty.
