The village was originally called Groversburg, and was named after the Grover family, who owned land in the area. The town became a post office in 1875 and incorporated in 1911, becoming an important potato center in the region. In 1914, people traveling to the eastern and northeastern parts of the county would detrain in the village and hire a rig from a livery.
