London is the most populous urban area in the United Kingdom, with a population more than twice as large as the rest of the country. Other major cities of a significant size are located in northern England and the English Midlands. In total, fifty settlements in England have been given city status. The United Kingdom as a whole has 66 cities.
While many English cities are large, size is not always a requirement for city status. Traditionally, city status was granted to towns with a diocesan cathedral. Some smaller cities include Ripon, Ely, Chichester, and Truro. Using the current population count, it may be difficult to determine how many people live in a city.
