The population of Magness City is primarily white. The town was incorporated in 1906, and the city celebrated by hosting a celebration with the shooting of an anvil. The township grew as Eastman Chemical Company and Tennessee Eastman Corporation expanded. In the 1980s, they built the state's largest electric steam generating plant, the Independence Steam Electric Station, to produce low-sulfur coal.

In the early nineteenth century, the population of Magness City numbered about six hundred and thirty people. The city was located near Batesville, Arkansas.
