The city has a long history. In the first century CE, it was part of Judea. The area was home to a number of Jewish communities. There was also a school in the area. In 1887, the Western Grove Academy opened and served the community. The local economy was based on farming and hunting. Many of the farms were located along the river. The county had 51 slaves in 1850, and there were 24 in 1860.
