In the twentieth century, the town's population has stabilised, thanks to the establishment of the MacMillan Oil Refinery, which employed many locals. In 1987, the refinery closed, and the city was bought by the Nor-Ark Industrial Corporation. However, the refinery left behind toxic waste, contaminating nearby water sources. The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) subsequently cleaned up the site, adding it to the National Register of Historic Places in 2008.

Norphlet is located in Union County, Arkansas, and was originally named Jesse. When the post office was established in 1891, the town was known as Jesse. The name of the town, however, was derived from a woman named Nauphlet Goodwin. When the Post Office employees saw her name written in long-hand, they assumed it was a woman, which sounded like Norphlet. The town was given its present name, which is still widely used today.
