The population of Staffordville was initially comprised of a series of farms and small agricultural villages in eastern Hartford County, but with the arrival of railroads and the Staffordville and Boston Railroad, the town began to industrialize and see a rapid increase in population. By the mid-19th century, the town was connected to markets all over New England by train and a trolley connected the town to Rockville, CT. The city's industrial base attracted immigrants of Irish, German, Swedish, and French descent, among many others.

Despite its historic roots, Staffordville has seen new construction and development over the last few years. In 1997, a Convention Center was constructed along the DCU Center arena in downtown Staffordville. In 2008, the city's historic Union Station opened for business after a $32 million renovation.
