Kinard was raised in Kinard and graduated from Newberry High School with honors. He also obtained an advanced diploma and completed certification in the Newberry County Career Center. He also completed a Leadership Newberry class. His involvement in the community includes serving on the Newberry County Family YMCA Board and as an alumni representative for the college's Presidential Task Force.
