Port Saint Joe is a small city that is part of the Gulf District. It has a single elementary school and a joint middle-high school. The city's mascot is the Sharks, and its school colors are purple and gold. It also has a Christian school, Faith Christian, and a community college. All the public schools are located within a one-mile development strip. The high school is located on a quarter-mile running track.

The city sits on the Gulf Intracoastal Waterway, a federally maintained canal. The canal is twelve feet deep and 125 feet wide, providing access to several areas of the Gulf Coast from St. Marks, Florida to Brownsville, Texas. The city's location also allows barges to be moved inland via various river systems. The Apalachicola River lies to the east of the city.
