Conyers grew to a population of 1,800 people in the early twentieth century, and was noted for its brothels and saloons. It also boasted a fine hotel, good schools, and a college with twelve doctors and lawyers. In the progressive era after Reconstruction, Conyers's Sally Fanny Gleaton became an influential suffragette.
