Varnell is a city in Whitfield County, Georgia, and is named after the Mormon missionary, Joseph Standing. He was murdered in Varnell, near Dalton, and is memorialized there. Reconstruction and the Civil War hit Whitfield County hard, but the area improved dramatically with the opening of the Crown Cotton Mill in Dalton in 1884. It operated 1,200 looms and 50,000 spindles by 1916, and drove economic and industrial growth to the area. The mill displaced thousands of white farmers and allowed more business to flourish.
