Northbrook City is located near Chicago, Illinois and is a suburban town. Its population is about 35,222. The city was first known as Shermerville and was incorporated on November 18, 1901. The name was changed to Northbrook in 1923. The village was named for Frederick Schermer, who donated the land for the city's first train station. The village's population grew tremendously after World War II, with more than 33,000 residents.

Northbrook has 18 streets named after early settlers. These settlers came to settle the land that was once the hunting grounds of traveling Potawatomi Indians. The settlers formed settlements on the prairie in all four corners of the Township and soon built schools. These schools would later be the foundation for Northbrook's four elementary school districts. One of the first settlements, Sanders and Dundee, had four schools, and became the largest neighborhood in the town for many years.
