The population of Sainte Marie City is 13,420, and the city is the county seat of Chippewa County, Michigan. It is the second-most populous city in the Upper Peninsula after Marquette. The city is the core of the Sault Ste. Marie Metropolitan Statistical Area, or SSMHA, which covers all of Chippewa County. The population was 38520 in 2010.

The city is served by Highway 17, a portion of the Trans-Canada Highway, which connects it to Thunder Bay and Sudbury. Across the river, the International Bridge connects downtown Sault Ste. Marie with Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan. On the American side, Interstate 75 extends south, passing through Flint and Saginaw. In addition, it crosses the Detroit River into Ohio, where it ends in Hialeah, Florida.

The city had a population of around 13,000 when it incorporated in 1912. Its population was estimated to be 18,800 by 1913. As the city grew, the Chamber of Commerce expanded its activities to include real estate, trade, and tourism. Its headquarters was located on Brock Street near the ferry docks.
