The population of Algona City, Iowa, was 5,741 at the 2000 census. The city was established in 1854 and is located in Kossuth County. It is in the (515) area code. According to the 2010 census, the population of Algona was down 3.24% from its 2000 census estimate. Located in the northwest corner of Iowa, the city is a great place to live for many reasons.

In 1968, the city was incorporated and expanded by annexing a portion of the town to the south. The south boundary of the city was redrawn to five avenues south. The city's first Water Commissioners were Forrest Bourn, Charles Fancher, and Herbert Yandell. In 1978, the city voted to create a park and named it after the late Mayor John Matchett. After retiring from office in 1981 due to ill health, the city commissioned a monument to honor him.

In addition to its beautiful natural beauty, Algona also had a thriving community. The town's first newspaper, the Algona Community News, was published on Oct. 26, 1926. It urged people to move to the community, citing excellent schools, a bustling church, and a lively Community Club. It was also connected to Seattle and Tacoma by streetcar service. The city was home to the prestigious Algona and Pacific Fair. The town also grew and was a center of agriculture.

The median age of residents was 34.4 years. Twenty-nine percent were under the age of 18. Another nine percent were between 18 and 24 years old. A further seventeen percent were 35 years or older. Forty-two percent of residents were classified as white-collar, while twenty-nine percent were in blue-collar jobs. The gender breakdown of the population in Algona City is roughly equal.
