A fire struck the town's historic downtown in 1922, destroying many of the businesses. New construction quickly replaced those destroyed.

The area has a high concentration of working-class residents, with 37.3% of people over the age of sixteen not in the labor force. While many people associate Mt. Auburn with old-fashioned suburban living, it lacks the polish of nearby neighborhoods like Hyde Park and Mt. Adams. However, it is slowly evolving. Like Over-the-Rhine, Mount Auburn has recently updated neighborhood parks. Inwood Park, located at the intersection of Reading Road and Burnet Avenue, is nearly 20 acres in size. The city also has 22 schools, including the prestigious Green River College.
