The Hutchinson Family Singers founded the city in 1855. Pendergast, a New England farmer, had spoken highly of the "Big Woods" west of St. Anthony. The group organized 13 "Articles of Agreement" that outlined the town's future. These documents established equal rights for men and women and included a Humanities Church. The city was occupied by the Sioux uprising in 1862.

A recent study conducted by the Census Bureau shows that the city's population is relatively spread out. Twenty-three percent of residents were under the age of eighteen and 11.0% were between 18-24 years of age. Twenty-four percent were 25-44 years old, twenty-five percent were between 45-64 years old, and sixteen percent were 65 years and older. The city is home to the Kansas Cosmosphere and Space Center aerospace museum. Its Strataca, or Kansas Underground Salt Museum, was the city's first museum dedicated to salt mining.
