The city of Natchitoches was first settled in 1714 by Louis Juchereau de St. Denis. It quickly grew as the parish's population increased. The city became home to English and Scots-Irish immigrants, many of whom were of Protestant faith. They migrated to the area to start cotton plantations along the Red River. The plantations employed African Americans in the domestic slave trade, providing all the other necessary skills needed to run a plantation. Before the Civil War, the planters in Natchitoches were wealthy planters.

The population of the city of Natchitoches is the parish seat of the parish of the same name. The town was named after the indigenous Natchitoches people. It was incorporated in 1819. It is the oldest permanent settlement established in the land acquired during the Louisiana Purchase. Today, it is home to Northwestern State University and a sister city, Nacogdoches.
