Saint Martinvlle Parish is largely French speaking. The Acadians brought a story about Evangeline, a young woman who lost her betrothed during expulsion. The two were reunited in St. Martinville, but he had already committed to another woman. Evangeline never recovered from the loss. Henry Wadsworth Longfellow based his story "Evangeline, A Tale of Acadie."
