Penobscot is a town in Hancock County, Maine, United States. It is situated on the Bagaduce River and is home to 1,136 people. The county seat is Bangor, Maine. Penobscot is one of 16 counties in Maine. The county contains the cities of Bangor, Old Town, and Millinocket. However, Ballotpedia does not cover these cities.

The population of Penobscot City was approximately 3,426 people. Twenty percent of residents were under the age of eighteen. Twenty-four percent were between the ages of 25 and 44. Twenty-one percent of households were made up of a woman who was living alone without her husband. Thirteen percent of households were non-families. And fourteen percent of the population was over the age of 65. The median age was 34 years, and there were more men than women. The male population outnumbered females by ninety-two to one.

Old Town is surrounded by the Penobscot River and the Stillwater River, which run through the city. The Abenaki Indians referred to the city as Pannawambskek, which means "where the ledges spread out." In the 1680s, the French established a Jesuit Catholic mission in the town. English pioneers began settling the city in 1774. The name Old Town comes from the English name of the largest Penobscot Indian village. Old Town is also known as Indian Island, which is home to a Native American museum and a memorial to Stephen King.
