The town grew in the 1800s from its waterfront, and was thriving with shipping and manufacturing until the War of 1812 brought an end to the prosperity of the city. In the 1800s, grander homes were built, and are mostly found on the "rim" of the town.

The town was formerly a Native American village. European settlers began settling in Wiscasset in 1663. In 1802, it adopted the Abenaki name of Wiscasset, which means "coming out of the harbor." The town grew as a hub for fishing, shipbuilding, and lumber. It was also in the running for the state capital, but lost due to its proximity to the sea. The town has since added multiple sources of infrastructure, including a nuclear power plant and a solar-powered power plant.
