Historically, Nutting Lake was considered its own region until the 1970s, when Interstate 495 and 290 were constructed. Since then, Boston's suburbs have been extending further westward. As a result, Nutting Lake represents the western periphery of the Greater Boston metropolitan area. The city is known as the "Heart of the Commonwealth."

The city was also home to the Massachusetts College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences, which built a campus downtown. In 2007 WPI opened its first facility in the Lincoln Square Gateway Park Center.
