Taunton City is located in Massachusetts. The city is home to many different businesses. In the 19th century, the city was a hub for the iron-making industry, using bog iron from the swamps around the town. The industry produced items such as stoves, tacks, and machinery. In 1846, William Mason started the Mason Machine Works, which produced machinery for the textile industry. The company continues to operate today.

In the 10th century, Taunton was a fortified settlement. The town was named after King Alfred the Great and was surrounded by a rampart, ditch, and wooden palisade. The town had a mint and market on the Parade by the tenth century.

Taunton is situated in southeastern Massachusetts, and is a major transportation hub. Many major highways intersect in the city, including US 44 and MA 138. To the north, MA 140 becomes a smaller state highway. The city is home to several universities, medical facilities, and various other business establishments.
