In fact, the township was ranked number three in the state for its school district in 2001. The former President of the United States was stationed in Grosse Ile in the years 1945 to 1947.

In the late seventeenth century, the island was deeded to prominent merchants in Detroit. Today, the island has an airport named after them. It is located near the Detroit River near Gray's Drive. There is an original deed in the Burton Historical Collection, which is part of the Detroit Public Library.
