The population of Ah-Gwah Ching City has been in decline for years. The city is home to inmates and psychiatric patients, including many of them prone to violent behavior. Today, there are only a few hundred people living there. Sadly, state officials say that the campus is inefficient, and many of its buildings are mothballed. In order to keep the population from dwindling, the facility will be closed by 2006.
In 1922, the State Sanatorium was renamed to Ah Gwah Ching, Minnesota. The name Ah Gwah Ching is an Ojibwe word meaning "outdoors." This city juts out against Leech Lake on a hillside. From 1907 to 1962, the city served as a tuberculosis sanitorium, where as many as 14,000 patients sought treatment to improve their health. The center was listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
