Dilworth City was created to accommodate the growing population of Charlotte, North Carolina. As a result, Latta acquired additional land to the east and south of the original Dilworth. He then sought the services of the famed Olmsted Brothers Firm. This firm was hired to design a 300-acre hourglass-shaped tract with a grand avenue in the northern section. The city would have two drives for trolley service.

The population of Dilworth began to increase from 0 in mid-July to 500 by the spring of 1910. The railroad workers needed places to stay until the town was built up. Soon enough, a post office and a bank were constructed. Dilworth was incorporated in 1911. By that time, there were four hundred and eight school-aged residents. Nearly 70 percent of these residents were railroad employees.

The city of Dilworth is located in Clay County, Minnesota. It is a part of the Fargo-Moorhead metro area, and the US Highway 10 serves as its main road. In addition to this, highway 336 connects to Interstate 94. The city's elevation is 909 feet. The population is mostly white and middle class, with an average income of $91,978.
