Leigh City, Colorado was originally part of Colfax County in 1869. In 1873 Stephen Miller hauled lumber into town to build a one-room house. This home became the post office and was home to the first postmistress. By 1874, school district 39 had been established. In 1875, A. M. Walling purchased the homestead from the Miller family. They renamed the town Leigh. The name was derived from Mrs. Walling's maiden name.

Leigh is home to 931 residents. There are 349 households in the city. The median home value is $74,231 and the average household size is 2.62. Leigh's population is expected to decrease by -0.2% by 2031. The demographics of the city are predominantly white (96.8%), with less than 1% black or Asian.

Leigh is located in Northeast Nebraska. It is accessed via Nebraska Highways 91 and 15. Leigh is approximately 86 miles from Omaha and 90 miles from Sioux City. According to the 2010 U.S. Census, the population of Leigh was 405 people, while the population of Colfax County was 123,886.

Leigh is home to four Pennington Flash Country Parks. The Leigh Branch of the Leeds and Liverpool Canal also passes through the city. The city is also home to a large sports village with capacity for up to 11,000 spectators.
