Founded in Roman times, Southampton expanded rapidly in the Middle Ages and was home to 3,000-4,000 people by the fourteenth century. At that time, streets were often named for a type of trade, and the bakers lived on Simnel Street. Other streets, such as Bugle Street and West Street, were aptly named after the animals that roamed nearby. And there were also streets named Wincle, and West Street was known as Butcher Row.

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the median household income in South Hampton City is $88,549. This is considerably higher than the national average and compared to other ZIP codes in the area. South Hampton City's demographics are nicer than those of neighboring cities. However, there are a few notable exceptions. A recent study by management and budget analyst Paul R. Harris indicated that more people live in Hampton than in Palm Beach County.
