The borough of Lavallette was incorporated in late December 1887. The name Lavallette is almost ten years older than the town itself. Its name came about when the Barnegat Land Improvement Company filed a plot plan with Ocean County in February 1878. The company's directors named the tract "Lavallette City by the Sea" to honor U.S. Navy Admiral Elie A. F. LaVallette, who had distinguished himself as a young lieutenant in the Battle of Lake Champlain and later commanded the U.S.S.S.S.S.S.S.S.S.S.S.S. Constitution. He was of French descent, and legally anglicized his name to Lavallette in 1830. His son was the secretary of the Barnegat Land Improvement Company,
