Its population is made up of four constituent neighborhoods, and is the 109th largest community in New Jersey. Before the development of the city, the region was known as the Mountain Society. It was named after the English ruling house of the same name. The name, however, was not used until the 1780s. South Orange's population was much lower then the average of nearby Newark. The town's population was a little over 6,000 in 1871. The area was later incorporated into Newark.
