The city is located at an elevation of 6,821 feet (2,079 m). Before the railway was built, the town was connected to the Pecos River by a trail called the Santa Fe Trail. The Santa Fe Trail also connected Ilfeld to Las Vegas. After the railroad built the railway next to the trail, the town was named Fulton. Today, the city is located on Route 66 and the CanAm highway south of the Pecos River.
