In 1880, the area was still inhabited by Native Americans, but permanent settlements were not established. In the nineteenth century, Mora became the county seat, located just northwest of Valmora City. It was named for the Mora River and its creek. Mora County was officially established in 1835. In the early 1900s, the Valmora Post Office was established, located in the southwest corner of the city. It had a large, rectangular main room, with the front part dedicated to the post office.
