Located just south of Big Bear City, Sugarloaf is a large residential area of approximately 12,000 people. The population was estimated to be about 10% Hispanic. As of the 2010 Census, the population of Bear Mountain City was 86,416. There were 12,226 housing units, with an average density of 382.4 per square mile. There were about 7,854 people living in this area, and 4,516 of them lived in non-families.

A mountain called Soda Peak is the highest mountain in the Bear River Range. This peak sits due south of Soda Springs, and to the east is Niter and Grace. It is a popular hiking spot. Hayden Survey, a noted local highpointer, first climbed it in 1879. The name of the mountain, however, comes from the Bible - Naomi was Ruth's mother-in-law.
