The town of Allegany is located on the southeast part of Cattaraugus County. It contains the village of Allegany. All the buildings in the center of the town are detached, and span nearly a mile. There are five churches, a brewery, two tanneries, a sash factory, a saw-mill, and at least seven or eight stores. There are also two hotels and a harness-shop.

In the early 1800s, a group of men called the Clark family settled on land owned by C.B. Learn. They kept a hotel and grocery store. The Clark brothers later went on to own several other properties. Their son Alfred Clark also lived in the area. A census survey of 1841 found that the town had a population of approximately 2,300. The Clark family also owned a farm.
