After graduating from Albany University, Johannes De Peyster became a member of the Provincial Assembly and the first mayor of Albany. He inherited his uncle's house on the south side of Yonkers Street, now State Street. De Peyster served as mayor of the city from 1729 to 1733, and later on purchased the first fire-fighting equipment. And he was again elected as an alderman in 1754, serving until his death in 1789.
