The Chinese community in Locke, California, a small agricultural town 30 miles south of Sacramento, was founded in 1915. A fire in Walnut Grove destroyed most of the town, and the Chinese community chose to rebuild in Walnut Grove. Several Chinese businessmen, however, decided to build a new community one mile north. They got a verbal lease on nine acres of land from the Locke family, who owned Lockeport along the Sacramento River levee. This land was leased under the Alien Land Law of 1913, which prohibited non-US citizens from owning land in California.
