North Jackson, Ohio Statistic: Population, Charts, Map, Steets and More

North Jackson is a city in the United States. The city is located in the state of Mississippi. In the American Factfinder, this city is in the 78th percentile for crime rates. While the city is not as dangerous as some neighboring cities, there are some things to keep in mind when visiting the area.

The area is primarily African American. According to the American Community Survey, the area's population was predominantly black between 2005 and 2009. Although the median income for African Americans was slightly higher than that of whites, home values dropped by nearly half or more when the housing bubble burst. However, the area is still relatively young in terms of both the number of residents and the number of homes. Owner occupancy rates are between sixty and seventy percent.

The area was also a focal point of the civil rights movement during the 1960s. The Movement had been active for many years, mounting legal challenges against Mississippi laws that disfranchised black citizens. In June 1966, the James Meredith March culminated in Jackson. This march, which started in Memphis, aimed to mobilize support for full implementation of civil rights in practice. The march included a voter registration drive for black Mississippians. It was estimated that between 2,500 and three thousand black Mississippians registered to vote as a result of the march.

In 1950, white residents comprised almost half of the city's population. However, the percentage of white residents decreased to a mere quarter of the city's population in the year 2000. This trend has slowed somewhat in recent years.
