The town is located thirteen miles northeast of Bay City. In 1899, the New York, Texas and Mexican Railroad constructed a branch line to Ashwood from Wharton, allowing for large amounts of ash logs to be shipped to various locations. In 1914, Ashwood had 87 residents and a general store. By the mid-1930s, there were 200 people living in the town. The town had a one-room school with four grades. The city had a two-teacher school in 1938 and a three-teacher elementary school in 1947.
