The city is the county seat of Curry County, Oregon. As of the 2000 census, the population was 1,897. The city was originally called Ellensburg, a name given to it after a gold-rich beach near the mouth of the Rogue River. In the 1850s, it was named Ellensburg. It had a post office at that time. The post office was changed to Gold Beach in 1873. Mailboats deliver mail between Gold Beach and Agness. This is one of only two rural mailboat routes in the U.S.
