The city grew rapidly during the twentieth century. The population grew to over 200. In 1912, the city was home to the Saint Benedict Grammar School. The school was founded in 1911 by the Franciscan Sisters of Christian Charity of Manitowoc, Wisconsin. The school's mission was to provide quality education to children and promoted Christian values. In its early years, the school was known for May Processions, plays, carnivals, and championship basketball teams. Sadly, the school closed in 1979. The high school, once a Catholic parish, became an independent entity.

Once the center of a small Catholic community, St. Benedict's Catholic School struggled to remain open during the 1960s. High-speed suburbanization, deindustrialization, and racial violence pushed residents out. The school's monks watched the riots in 1967 from the roof of the school. Ultimately, the school closed its doors. The rebirth, however, brought hope to the residents of Saint Benedict City.
