The population of Wedderburn is twelve hundred and fifty-nine residents. The population was nine hundred and seventy-one in 2011 and nineteen in 2016. The predominant age group is 50-59, and the majority of households in the city are headless couples with no children. The median income for residents is $1000 to $1399 a month. Most people live in single-family homes, with 77.5% of them being owner-occupied.

While the city is not known for its tourism industry, it is rich in historical significance. Wedderburn is a gold-mining town with ample public land for exploration. A cairn commemorating the first white man to see the area is located five kilometres south of the city on Calder Highway. John Catto was the first squatter to take up land in the area, with his run covering nearly six thousand acres (two-seven thousand hectares) of land. Many other individuals followed suit, and a number of runs are still in use today.

After the 1890s, Wedderburn's population began to decline. However, the recent discovery of gold in the town has reignited its interest. In 1855, the town was home to the first gold nugget in the world, called Hand of Faith, found by Kevin Hillier. Today, the city is primarily a farming town. It is also home to the head office of the local Shire Council, as well as a large p-12 school.
