Shippensburg is located in southeast central Pennsylvania, along the Susquehanna River. It was incorporated on January 21, 1819 and is home to various furniture factories, pump and engine works, and industrial operations. Among the prominent industrial companies are The Beistle Company, which is the world's oldest manufacturer of honeycomb paper decorations. Pague and Fegan, one of the oldest continuously-operated hardware stores in the United States, is also located in Shippensburg. Shippensburg also is the home of the Shippensburg University of Pennsylvania.

The township's historical roots are traced to the 1730 arrival of a group of Scotch-Irish families. The town developed as a western outpost of colonial settlement, and was named after Edward Shippen, a member of William Penn's family. In 1735, Samuel Perry built Widow Piper's Tavern, which later became the first county courthouse. The town also experienced several industrial operations in the 18th and nineteenth centuries, including engine and pump works and furniture factories. In 1819, Shippensburg became a borough and was incorporated as a municipality.
