The town of Hurricane Forge began as a small farming community during the antebellum era, but soon grew into a thriving community after the Civil War. In 1876, the town was officially incorporated as Hurricane Mills, and James T. Anderson introduced progressive farming techniques to the area. The Anderson family reopened Hurricane Mills' businesses and established a post office there.
