The town was first settled in 1909 and named for the original owner of the area, M.C. Abernathy. It was platted on July 8, 1909, and the town was incorporated in 1910. The city gained its post office in 1910, and by 1914 it had about 300 residents. The city had four churches, several stores, and a bank. During the early 1950s, the population was over 1,960.

The non-citizen population of Abernathy is largely comprised of women who are 15 to 19 years old. The town has a low percentage of female non-citizens (Figure 40).
