The population of Desoto increased dramatically after the 1950s. In 1950, the city had only two hundred residents, but had nearly doubled in the following decade. In 1956, the city gained its first industry when the Southwest Industrial Materials Corp. announced plans to establish a clay processing plant in the city. As the city grew, the school system grew from 187 students to five hundred in 1958.
